my problem is as follows: I have implemented related article -linking in the CMS via a relationship, but I need the client to be able to link a specific related article without the two of them linking to each other.
What I need is a way to define an ID or URL in the CMS and have it pull the link, title and image of another item in the template. Any ideas?

In the CMS, there is no way to dynamically populate specific fields based on a chosen relationship in the content type. I don't think that's what you meant, though.
During rendering via the template,
getItem() will allow you to pull a piece of content by id: http://www.webhook.com/docs/template-rules-and-filters/#getitem
getItem() will work for you.

Hey, thanks for your answer.
What I need to create is a way to link another article in an article, i.e. "Further reading:"
I've done this with a relationship between the two, but this isn't ideal as they link to each other, so the user can't continuously jump to the next article one after another.

You could also achieve this using categories/tags rather than a relationship field.
